I can see reasons for why you would like to access them remotely. The bigger question in my mind is why are they connected to the internet so shittily?
When we place devices in customer networks we have the device open a VPN tunnel back to our concentrator node, and route our management traffic through it.
Then the customer firewall blocks anything incoming as usual, and all we need is the rules to allow outgoing VPN client traffic and established rules for the responses from the server.
I can see value in monitoring them remotely. I’m not sure I see much value in being able to change the temperature setting remotely. If you need to change the setting, there’s probably already something wrong…
They likely set the temps lower during store hours to keep in spec with the doors opening all the time. During closed hours, they may raise the set point since the doors are staying shut.
Even odder… They didn’t change the temperature setting, they forced the defrosters to run at 100% power.
Who ever thought it was necessary to have the defroster remotely controllable? Who thought it was a good idea to have it run without any sort of limits?
Well there might be specific times that you want to run the defrosters, like maybe overnight after the stocking has finished? (Avoiding times when the doors are going to be I opened a lot?)
So there might be a good reason to have that sort of remote control. I assumed it was automatic like in a house fridge, but maybe there’s a good reason it isn’t automatic.

Obviously the refrigerator techs would love to hop on a laptop instead of driving out to a store at 3am.

Apparently many shops where not aware of the risks or that they where even connected.
