One time at work someone had the idea of “let’s all swap our favorite playlists”. No one was happy. I got some like top of the charts rap that’s not my jam. The product lady got my sludgy doom metal and I don’t think she made it through one track. I think the mega kpop fan just refused to participate.

I think part of the problem is that Bethesda doesn’t really seem to have a good critical understanding. They like the superficial stuff, like children. Like this meme, I guess.

So we come to my second point. There was only one Nazism. We cannot label Franco’s hyper-Catholic Falangism as Nazism, since Nazism is fundamentally pagan, polytheistic, and anti-Christian. But the fascist game can be played in many forms, and the name of the game does not change. The notion of fascism is not unlike Wittgenstein’s notion of a game. A game can be either competitive or not, it can require some special skill or none, it can or cannot involve money. Games are different activities that display only some “family resemblance,” as Wittgenstein put it. Consider the following sequence:

Suppose there is a series of political groups in which group one is characterized by the features abc, group two by the features bcd, and so on. Group two is similar to group one since they have two features in common; for the same reasons three is similar to two and four is similar to three. Fascism became an all-purpose term because one can eliminate from a fascist regime one or more features, and it will still be recognizable as fascist. Take away imperialism from fascism and you still have Franco and Salazar. Take away colonialism and you still have the Balkan fascism of the Ustashes. Add to the Italian fascism a radical anti-capitalism (which never much fascinated Mussolini) and you have Ezra Pound. Add a cult of Celtic mythology and the Grail mysticism (completely alien to official fascism) and you have one of the most respected fascist gurus, Julius Evola.

We have like no rights here in the US with regards to labor, so they can basically do what they want so long as they cover half of their ass.

Most coding challenges are stupid. You’ll have a job that’s just working on a basic ass API in front of the database, and they’ll be like “can you solve the traveling salesman problem?”. You don’t need to know if I can pull fancy algorithms out of my ass. You need to know if I can cover the basics and take feedback.

Though the last code challenge I had was “can you remove duplicates from this list of integers?”. I was like, "can I just convert it to a set?’ and they were like “…ok”. Didn’t get the role, but the pay was bad, it was in office, the company is surprisingly politically conservative, and they’re rewriting their codebase “to support AI development”. So maybe that sas for the best.

There was a job I applied to that wanted the exact thing I had done at my last job. Same tech tech. Same early startup. Same kind of project. They rejected me without even a phone screen for “someone more in line with their needs”.

There’s no incentive for them to do a better job.

It sucks for everyone but the people in charge are too stupid or apathetic to change anything.

I applied to an internal role like 2 months ago and they’re just ghosting me. Like, I see them on teams. I send them follow up messages. Nothing. Bunch of AI brained assholes.

I remember once on a forum a big cis het guy was saying that he’s never seen cat calling on the street. Never him, and never at any of his friends. Someone pointed out that since he’s a big dude, he’s probably not going to be catcalled, and other shitty dudes are likely not going to bother people near him because of patriarchy.

To everyone’s surprise, he came back and was like “ok that makes sense. And I asked my women friends and they told me a lot of stories”

Rare to see someone change their mind like that.

I thought the conservative stance was that there’s no systemic racism.

I mean, there’s no limit to how stupid people can be. But I think a lot of conservatives like to say that the racism of the past doesn’t matter anymore. That a family that was enslaved 160 years ago (just beyond living memory now, but potentially someone’s great-great-grandparent), and then subject to Jim Crow and other cruelties through… generously the 1960s but realistically the 1980s, that family has no long lasting effects.

But really it’s important to remember that conservatives just say things. They don’t care about facts or truth. They care about power, and their emotions. So even if you proved that racism was systemic and had measurable effects (eg: The Color of Law), it won’t matter. They don’t care about facts. They care about feelings.

This is funny because many conservatives say things like “facts don’t care about your feelings”, but it’s well known that conservatives project more than movie theaters.

My current partner I got to try FromSoft games. Sekiro did not go well for them.

One of the things that feeds into my insufferable smugness about living in a walkable city is I haven’t paid for gas in years (outside of like… maybe 2 road trips a decade). It’s just not something I think about.

I had the luxury of being able to move somewhere with trains and buses, though.

You cannot assume that the people making decisions are rational, smart, people. They may believe falsehoods, and act accordingly. They may be chasing a hidden goal (eg: “I get a bonus if I hit X metric, so I’ll kill good parts of the site to do it”)

I worked at a place where management was like “we want to increase time on site”, and the lead dev was like “I can just add loading spinners everywhere then”. Luckily management was a little smarter and move involved than that, and didn’t approve that strategy.

Because they’re assholes. They don’t care about making a good product. They care about making money. Even though they already have a lot of money, they need more. No matter the cost.

This is as much a movement as it’s going to get. Peer to peer.

Refuse to pay. If we all just refused to pay, they would have to change.

But too many people don’t care, so I guess we’ll all just suffer.

There’s a lot of ghost jobs. Should probably be illegal to knowingly post a ghost job, with penalties to the tune of “pay a year’s salary to every applicant”
