  • Absolutely true.

However, that doesn’t mean you can erase your old name from other people’s minds and mouths.

I still have people that call me by my middle name.

I first started using, and requesting that it be used by others, my first name innnnn… . Fuck. I think it was 86? +/- a year, in that range. So, you know, fictional Gaylord from this urban myth is likely to run into similar, and maybe worse because at least I was using a name I was assigned by my parents, which reduced friction a ton both in the family and at school.

But that was forty fucking years ago, and the majority of my family still use my middle name. There were a couple of classmates that took a year or so to switch, and a couple of assholes that refused to and even tried to weaponize it.

And neither of my names is as culturally awkward as Gaylord.

Folks reading this far that might have someone in their life that wants to be called something other than what you’re used to. Be a bro, give them that respect. They’ll value you for it.

  • Shit, I’ve been banned from lemmy communities for comments that I don’t even think of as being that dark. Reddit too. You don’t see as much death and misery as I saw without developing some level of gallows humor.

But the shit I got banned for was me self checking. Minimising the extremity of it. Tweaking the phrasing so it should have been obvious it was dark humor (not that anyone had to find it funny, but it was pretty fucking obvious it was dark humor).

There’s maybe three people I’ve ever known that have been around my darkest humor and not freaked out a little. One of those still needed to state they weren’t okay with it, but recognised it as dark humor.

Only people that I’ve had extended interactions with that really got the darkest stuff and laughed too were also people that have seen what real darkness is and recognize that finding a way to laugh at it is the only way you keep from breaking entirely.

Truth be told, that entirely is doing a lot of work there. Some shit breaks you, and not all the mental superglue in the world will fix it. But dark humor is good glue. It holds shit into one piece instead of destroying you, and I reckon that anyone that doesn’t get that isn’t worth my time and energy anyway

  • Every day? Even back when I could cook that would be a no. Because that’s not a relationship, that’s a job.

I’m fine with being a SAH h/d. Hell, if I were a dad in that situation it would be amazing to have the freedom to be there every day, at least until the teenage years hit and the kid/s would be branching out into the first stages of their own lives. Being a dad that is disabled was better than being a dad that couldn’t be at home because he was a wage slave. So being healthy and having that freedom too? Sign me up.

But the way the meme makes it out, that’s just a job. Might still be a good relationship, but once obligations at that scale start creeping in, relationships can crumble faster than people can patch them up.

That being said, I fucking loved cooking for my people. So I would still do it every chance I got in that situation. Just couldn’t let it be some kind of transactional shit.
